Inspired by one of the most remarkable illuminated books of the Psalms ever produced, the Stuttgart Psalter, this unique presentation captures the artistic and religious spirit of the Church before the Renaissance and the “Age of Reason.”  Only one copy of the Stuttgart Psalter, produced at the Scriptorium, Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Paris, circa 820 A.D., is known today.  It was purchased in 1787 A.D. by Charles Eugene, Duke of Württemberg, and is now held at the Württembergische Landesbibliothek, Stuttgart, Germany.  The library generously provided the high-resolution images used in this volume.  The Book of Psalms is known as “Christ’s prayer book” owing to His frequent citations of it.   The author searched dozens of online resources and print sources for illustrated Psalters and other liturgical books with the same strong sense of Christology, or the study of Christ in the Psalms.   From the 316 illuminations in the Stuttgart Psalter, 165 were selected.  Forty-nine images are from other Psalters produced from the 10th to the 17th C.   The sources include the Psalter of Henry VIII, with Henry’s marginal notations in Latin; the Psalter of Eleanor of Aquitaine, the wealthiest woman in Europe at the time and wife of English King Henry II; and the Psalter of Maria of Burgundy, future wife of Emperor Maximillian I.  Each illumination includes an explanation of the Psalm and verse being illustrated.

The Psalm text is from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer (1943 American Edition) set in Luminari, an Apple type face chosen for its compatability with the Carolingian script in the Stuttgart Psalter.  Illuminated scrolls behind the initial capitals were designed for this book by Corinne M. Shibley.   Two hundred fourteen illustrations.  8.5” x 8.5” format.  452 pages.  $85.00. ISBN: 9798369888568.
